Lots of people are afraid of the dark. Perhaps as a child your parents failed to help you make good a transition from having the light on in the bedroom to turning it off when they were asleep.

Why are you afraid of the dark?

There is a good reason for having the light off when you sleep, from a medical point of view. The darker the room the more melatonin hormone the brain makes and the better you sleep. Having the light on when you sleep disturbs the sleep, you sleep lighter, you are more easily disturbed, you might not reach the deep slow brain wave sleep where you dream which helps you have good mental health.

People who do not go into those deep sleeps often have higher incidences of mental health problems. Maybe you experienced something unpleasant in the dark in the past and that has caused you to be afraid of the dark. You feel as long as the light is on you can react to anything that happens.

How does being afraid of the dark affect your behaviour and life?

Being afraid of the dark and insisting on having the light on in the bedroom can cause problems for your partner who may have trouble sleeping with the light on. This can sometimes force people to end up sleeping in different rooms which may lead to a sense of distance between the couple.
